With the weather warming up this week, why not get BBQ ready with 10% off all Fairtrade Charcoal? Read our story today on how we help support Fairtrade producers in Namibia and how Fairtrade makes a difference to our producers.
Fairtrade Charcoal
With no international recognised Fairtrade standards for charcoal, our unique partnership with Traidcraft means we support burners and workers in Namibia with our Fairtrade charcoal and BBQ set sales. Made using Namibian Fairtrade charcoal, all sales go towards funding life-improving projects in Namibia.
Did you know?
-
In 2009 we launched the world’s first fairly traded BBQ charcoal.
-
Since we launched our Fairtrade charcoal in 2009, over £400,000 has been raised.
-
This has gone towards some incredible projects like building houses and community vegetable growing.
Building houses
In some Namibian communities, they have built over 100 houses for the charcoal burners at camps where they work in the bush. The houses keep people dry, warm and safe from dangers such as snakes.
“The houses are very nice and keep the cold out. They are much better than before and now we even have proper toilets and showers. This is a good place to work. We like our homes and we get paid when we want. It’s not like some of the other places.”
Community vegetable growing
Workers in Namibia have also used some of the Fairtrade premium money to invest in a water filtration system and a vegetable garden. This has meant that lots of ‘grey’ water from their showers is no longer wasted but used to water the vegetable garden, providing healthy vegetables and fruit for the workers’ lunches and for their families too.
Don’t forget you get 10% off all other Fairtrade products too! You can receive 10% off all Fairtrade products in-store – helping to make it easier for you to live ethically every day. For more information click here.
Due to the unprecedented and continued hot weather we have decided to take the sensible decision to remove all disposable BBQ’s from sale as a responsible retailer.
Please ensure that you extinguish your BBQ safely with water and dispose of it responsibly when fully cooled.
