Thanks to our remarkable colleagues, we’ve made some great progress to save energy across our sites, including reducing usage by 11% over the last year. To build on this, we have been exploring further innovation opportunities to continue to save electricity usage wherever possible.
As a result of this, we have invested in automation technology provided by LoweConex to improve the efficiency of our refrigeration units and temperature control across more than 100 food stores.
Who are LowConex?
LoweConex automates the control and maintenance of this equipment, ultimately enabling us to further reduce our energy usage and associated greenhouse gas emissions, and easily manage comfort levels for colleagues.
So far, this initiative has saved more than 400,000 kilowatts of energy and over £100,000 in electricity.
The investment in this technology forms part of our £800,000 commitment to energy efficiency projects this year, helping to drive us to our sustainability linked banking target of 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the end of this year (compared to 2019 levels).
Recognised for our efforts - Energy Project of the Year!
This hard work has already resulted in our Society being awarded ‘Energy Project of the Year’ at The Energy Awards, beating a range of projects to the prize including Aldi’s Eco Concept Store. This award is in recognition of our collective efforts when it comes to improving energy efficiency across all sites, particularly around our automation investment across refrigeration, heating and cooling with Lowe Conex.

We look forward to working with our colleagues further throughout the year to maximise this new technology to drive further savings.
