Saving Energy where we can – Get involved

The increase in global energy costs has had an effect on all of us, whether you’re an individual, family or a business. So, over the next few months, we will be focusing on helping to drive energy savings in the workplace and at home. Remember, even the smallest of actions can collectively make a big change, that’s the power of 1 Change. To kick things off, this week we are focusing on opportunities to save energy in the workplace.

To help tackle this issue we have created an Energy Reduction Steering Group, that meets on a weekly basis.

The Steering Groups’ focus to date has been on identifying energy-saving opportunities across our Food Stores, where our Food colleagues are already doing a great job in driving forward their own 1 Change by collectively contributing to these energy savings.  Through a combination of energy-saving property projects and colleague behaviours, our Food Retail business has managed to reduce energy usage year to date by 5% on a like-for-like basis, saving over 700,000 kWh of electricity. 

This is equal to reducing our CO2 emissions by over 150 tonnes, supporting our pledge to reduce our direct Greenhouse gas emissions by 50% over the next 5 years.

We have a target to reduce electricity usage across our operations by at least 10% by the end of the year, saving 4.8 million kWh.  This will save over 1,000 tonnes of Co2 and save around £1 million on our Society's energy bills.  

In order to really drive this forward, we need the help of you and all your colleagues across our Trading Sites and Support Offices. With a few small changes in your day-to-day activities, together, we can make that 1 Change and create a difference.

Your actions will not only help us reduce energy costs but will also help us continue to reduce our Greenhouse Gas emissions and protect the environment.
