As part of our commitment to creating a sustainable future, we’ve been working hard to tackle food waste across our food stores – and Zero Waste Week (1st – 5th September) is the perfect time to reflect on the progress we’ve made.
Since 2019, we’ve reduced the number of food waste items in our stores by 25%, which is equivalent to more than 700,000 fewer items going to waste. This achievement has been made possible through a combination of smarter operational processes, the hard work of our colleagues, our partnership with Too Good To Go, and our collaboration with Olio.

Through our Olio partnership, launched in summer 2024, we’ve already helped to divert 430,000 items of food to people in need – enough to feed 6,500 households, saving over 100,000kg of food waste and providing more than 170,000 meals.

But we’re not stopping there...
Our target is to reduce food waste by 30% compared to 2019 levels by the end of this year. This forms part of our member-led sustainability strategy, shaped by the priorities our members told us matter the most - with food waste highlighted as a key focus area.
Our efforts were recently recognised at The Grocer Gold Awards 2025, where we won Sustainability Initiative of the Year for our member-led approach to tackling sustainability challenges like food waste.
This Zero Waste Week, we’d like to say a big thank you to all colleagues for the role you play every day in helping us reach these milestones. Together, we’re making a real difference.
