More than half a million people have fled their homes to escape conflict in Ukraine, leaving behind jobs, belongings and loved ones. As the humanitarian crisis unfolds, many people in the UK are looking for ways they can help, and we know that our members will want to be part of this.
At Midcounties, we’re proud to support the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. The DEC are working in Ukraine and neighbouring countries to meet the immediate needs of all people fleeing by providing food, water, medical assistance, protection, and trauma care. You can find out more about the appeal here.
We will be writing to all members, making them aware of the appeal, and this will also be promoted within our trading sites and on our digital channels, encouraging donations to the appeal.
If you wish to support this appeal you can donate in several ways.
You can also donate in-store at any of our Food stores, online or by texting COOP to 70150*
By donating to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, you'll help DEC charities provide food, water, shelter and healthcare to refugees and displaced families.
Every pound donated by the UK public will be matched by the UK government through its Aid Match scheme up to the value of £20 million. This support will double the impact of donations and will ensure that charities working on the ground can reach those in urgent need.
Currently the focus is on supporting the DEC appeal, however we are also looking at other avenues of support including business sponsorships, support for refugees and longer-term solutions.
This includes ensuring that Your Co-op Broadband and Your Co-op Mobile customers will not be charged for any texts, mobile or landline calls to Ukraine from 1st of February 2022.
We are also working closing with the cooperative movement in the UK and worldwide to give support. In recent years the UK co-op sector has collectively donated over £100,000 to provide emergency Covid support to co-operatives in India and nearly 100,000 Australian dollars to help co-operatives rebuild after the Australian wildfires in early 2020.
How to deal with anxiety around the war in Ukraine
