Keeping the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church in Willenhall looking spick and span has become something of an annual project for Head of IT Operations Tracy Edwards and a team of 10 remarkable colleagues from sites in Walsall and Wolverhampton. Tracy updates us on her volunteering day.
A team of 10 remarkable colleagues from our Walsall and Wolverhampton sites volunteered for a great cause
Q. Tracy, how did this volunteering opportunity come about?
The church means a lot to me personally as I got married there. A couple of years ago I attended a family funeral and noticed how tired the grounds were looking, which prompted me to reach out and arrange the community day. This is our third year doing this now and it always turns out to be a good day.
Q. What did you do during the day?
The church grounds get long and untidy at this time of the year, so we cleared the path that leads down from the car park to the main road and trimmed down a lot of the overgrowth between the graves.

Q. How did you find the day?
It’s a great opportunity for people in the office to get outdoors, and you don’t realise the impact it can have on people who use the church a lot to see it looking nice again.
Q. Why do you think it's important for colleagues to volunteer?
I just think that it’s the perfect opportunity to give back to the community. Gwenda (who runs the church) emails us regularly and is so thankful for the work we do. She always looks forward to the service after our gardening, so everyone can see it. It might not seem like much to us, but to them it’s everything

Gwenda was so appreciative of the team’s work and sent Tracy this lovely thank you:
“I went to lock the hall and had a walk around the churchyard. The birds were singing and the churchyard looked beautiful. I can't thank you all enough for your hard work. People will be remarking about the difference on Sunday, not to mention others who use the church path as a good way to walk down the road.”
Don’t forget, all colleagues receive 22.5 hours a year (pro-rata) of paid volunteering time. If you’d like to start doing good together, take a look at the Colleagues Connect Volunteering page.
Did you know that our Doing Good Together Fund could also help the group you volunteer for? Why not nominate them for a grant...find out more here.
