Today is World Heart Day. That means that this time last year our fantastic Food stores began fundraising to install defibrillators across our Food stores (without a defibrillator nearby) and did amazingly well, raising over £40,000!
Fabulous fundraising
To raise this fantastic amount you’ve run cake sales, shaved your heads, done sponsored cycle rides and put on loads of in-store activities. Here are a few photos of some of you in action…

Thanks to you we now have…
-
38 defibrillators on our sites (including those fitted in partnership with the local community)
-
Funding for a further 9 units that are awaiting installation (due to stock shortages)
Well done to everyone involved in fundraising or donating – we couldn’t have done it without you! ♥
Win a Defibrillator for Your Community competition winner
Earlier in the year, we ran the ‘Win a defibrillator for your community’ competition which received 400 entries from members all over the country.
The lucky winner was member Robert Harper who lives in Durham and is an Energy customer.
Robert is also a volunteer on the South Tynedale Heritage Railway and this is what he said in his winning application:
“Our deputy chairman had a heart attack on site recently and his heart actually stopped. Fortunately, an A&E trained nurse was volunteering that day and kept him alive until an ambulance arrived (the nearest A&E hospital is some 20 miles away). Without that expertise or a defibrillator, he would almost certainly have died. The defibrillator would be kept in the staff room at Alston Station of the South Tynedale Railway, which is accessible to all volunteers when on duty.”
Well done Robert and a big thank you to everyone who entered for such a great cause.
Leaving a legacy
We’ve worked with Community Heartbeat Trust for many years now and to help, they create videos providing tips on how to check defibrillators and how to administer support when needed.

Plus a huge thank you to all our colleagues who use their volunteering hours to check the defibrillators every week. Making sure they’re in good working order at all times is essential, as you never know when they’ll be needed.
