Tomorrow is World Water Day. For 15 years we’ve been doing good together with One Water and the One Foundation, which has led to some amazing outcomes.
For over 15 years, we have worked with One Water and The One Foundation as part of (Federal Retail and Trading Services) FRTS to tackle global water poverty.
For every bottle of Co-op branded water sold, we donate 3p to the charity and 1p for other branded waters – making it easier for members to make ethical choices every day.
This has significantly helped them reach the amazing milestone of raising £30 million and providing 5 million people with access to clean water.

Where is the money spent?
The money is invested in implementing large scale urban water systems and repairing handpumps in Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi and Kenya, as well as responding to humanitarian emergencies.
So, every bottle of water we sell really does change lives.
Why this is so important
-
There are still 703 million people worldwide don’t have access to clean drinking water
-
More than 1,000 children aged under 5 die each day from illnesses caused by unsafe water and sanitation
“Life was so difficult in terms of water. A lot of children were going to school late, they can now go to school very early because of safe water…You have done well bringing safe water into our community.” Julius, Teacher, Volta Region of Ghana
Over the last 7 years, the Co-op and The One Foundation have been working with Co-op’s Fairtrade banana producer communities in the Volta region of Ghana to develop locally owned and managed water stations.
The water stations support the most vulnerable – women and children, who are usually responsible for travelling long distances to collect often unsafe water. These demands consequently limit their education and work opportunities, and lock families into a cycle of poverty.
Let’s do good together this World Water Day and pick up a bottle at your local store.
