If you’re the type who likes to decorate their house for Halloween, have you ever given thought to the environmental impact of your decorations?
Many seasonal decorations are made of plastic and other materials that are harmful to our planet. Get creative and make your own - old sheets make great ghosts, or decorate used glass jars. Recycle egg cartons into bats too, the ideas are endless!
Carved pumpkins are a must for Halloween and are also one of the most eco-friendly decorations you can get. However, 8 million pumpkins will be binned in the UK alone after Halloween, with only a third of those who buy pumpkins to carve using the edible leftovers.
Well to combat this, check out our sustainability tips below on how you can use all of your pumpkins this year and ultimately reduce food waste:
-
Carve the pumpkin – the most obvious one after removing the core.
-
Roast the pumpkin seeds – just like many seeds and nuts, they are a nutritional option to snack on. Simply put them on an oven tray, season and let them crisp up – Yum!
-
Use the pumpkin ‘guts’ in veggie stock – when cutting up a pumpkin you will probably see the strands of the pumpkin core. Don’t throw these away, add them to your vegetable stocks and soups!
-
Cook or bake the pumpkin flesh – they are not just for Halloween, Pumpkins are a vegetable that can be eaten. So why not make soup?
-
Compost the pumpkin remains – if you have a composter, you can add the pumpkin in to help provide nutrients for next year’s compost growth for your garden. Slugs and insects love snacking on this but ensure it’s covered otherwise it will react to the elements…
Your Latest Thumbs Up 👍
Well done and congratulations! The team at Pendeford Post Office won National service week and was presented with a certificate and chocolates. A massive thank you to all the branches who got involved in National Customer Service week.
We set up a food bank-type bin for Just Straight Talk, our local charity partner for just tea coffee and biscuit donations for their meetings and sessions. I took down a big donation for their skittles afternoon and it was lovely to see first-hand what support network was in place for these guys they seemed a lovely bunch and showed the importance of us giving them as much support as possible. What is Thumbs Up?👍
‘Thumbs Up’ is our way of celebrating all your heroic efforts by sharing your great work and giving other colleagues the ability to like it.
It could be some great customer feedback you've received, something you've done to help the local community or simply a Thumbs Up to your team!
Just make sure you please take care of social distancing for pictures together as we are also following guidelines on this and hope you are too.
Thank you for the contribution, if for whatever reason you don’t want it to be used in this way please contact communications@midcounties.coop.
