The Christmas period for many across the LGBTQIA+ community can be a time of isolation and loneliness. Hear a few helpful tips from colleague Elliot Bateman from the Co-op Pride group.
Please take a moment during the festive season to think about how you can make somebody’s day better, with a kind word, a smile or even just a small gesture of kindness. People may be spending the festive period away from the family home because they have been ostracised by their families after coming out.
Whilst there may be other spaces outside of the family home for those from the LGBTQIA+ community some may not be able to bring their partner to celebrations as they’ve not felt able to come out to their friends and/or their families. Please think about what you say to your friends and family when you’re together. Remember language is very powerful and can be used emotionally and physically.
If you’re feeling isolated or alone, reach out to your friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Take time to talk to people that you know may be feeling lonely in these challenging times and above all remember to be kind.
LGBT switchboard is a fantastic support, available to anybody that identifies as LGBTQIA+ on 0300 330 0630 and is open 10am – 10pm every day.
