This week we held our fantastic Co-op Difference event at Wolverhampton Racecourse. As part of this very special day, we announced awards to colleagues in each of our trading groups who had demonstrated an outstanding level of support for their local community using their volunteering hours.
Please join us in extending a huge well done to all of the winners and runners up in the Community Colleague Awards. The awards were presented by Board Member Barbara Rainford and Society President Helen Wiseman.
Here are your chosen winners…
Amanda Westley from our Walsall Funeral branch
Amanda has established strong connections with local businesses, charities and churches and is always looking to help the local community with innovative ideas. Her community support has included working closely with the Royal British Legion to sell pin badges to help raise funds and working closely with Elmore Green School to arrange for the children to sing at Bloxwich Co-operative Funeralcare’s annual Christmas service.
Shondel Henry from our Maidavale Co-operative Childcare Nursery
Shondel regularly supports local charities and churches, making costumes for school children to use in dance and drama groups and actively involves fellow colleagues and nursery children in supporting good causes, including community tidy up activities, and cooking afterschool meals for children from deprived areas.
Leah Creed from our Cinderford Co-operative Travel branch
Leah has played an inspirational role within the Forest of Dean Regional Community, taking on fundraising activity, engaging with local charity partners as well as running the Travel gazebo at the Gloucestershire Fun Day with her colleagues who are so engaged and positive, which is a reflection of Leah’s leadership skills. Natalie Turner collected the award on behalf of Leah.
Richard Saunders from our Lydney Co-operative Food Store
Richard is dedicated to arranging and participating in fundraising events for local charity partners. Recently he took part in a 24-hour relay event in Lydney and has dedicated many hours arranging and completing an in-store Spinathon event to raise funds for charity. Richard has also previously completed the London Marathon raising money for the Outward Bound Trust.
Altaz Landhani from our Headington Post Office
Altaz actively supported the Oxford Regional Community over the year and made some great connections with the local community. As well as working for our Post Office Group, he is a part-time retained firefighter and regularly supports our charity events with the local fire brigade. He has established great connections with local schools including grant support and opportunities for children to visit our Trading sites to learn more about our business.
Norma White from Franche Road Co-operative Healthcare
Norma has provided fantastic support to our Wyre Forest Regional Community. Working with one of our local charity partners, Home Start. She has undertaken an intensive 10-week preparation programme to become a volunteer to support a local family, going above and beyond to provide sensitive support, encouragement and friendship at a difficult time in a family’s life.
Mo Patel from The Phone Co-op
Mo supports a broad range of community projects in his home community, serving all sections and backgrounds in the local area. His support has included visiting the local town centre and providing free food to the homeless and helping with CV writing to help develop employability prospects of young people. Recently Mo arranged an inspirational churchyard clean-up programme, engaging volunteers from different faith backgrounds working together for common good. Nick Thompson collected the award on behalf of Mo.
Mark Redgrave from our Head Office in Warwick
Mark is instrumental in furthering food bank partnerships, championing the eco-bricks scheme across multiple sites and departments, and has organised a project to completely redecorate one of our local partner schools. He is very passionate about Regional Community projects, actively engaging other colleagues and regularly goes above and beyond to deliver successful community projects.
