It’s been almost two months since we relaunched colleague volunteering to include community activities you do outside of work time. Today, we’re sharing a few more of our remarkable colleague volunteering stories.
We know that you, our remarkable colleagues, are doing outstanding things every day to make a difference in your communities. On 1st August we announced that we wanted to capture all the ways you are doing good together by recording both the volunteering done in Society time (paid) and the volunteering you do in your own time (unpaid).
To find out more about colleague volunteering and these changes visit the Colleagues Connect Volunteering page which contains a short video explaining what’s changed, the Volunteer Policy, a user guide on how to submit your hours and the Volunteer Challenge Pack, which includes a risk assessments. This needs to be completed for all paid time volunteering activity.
How Laura, Ashleigh and Nigel volunteer to make a difference
In our August update we showcased two remarkable colleague stories and we want to share three more inspiring stories today.
Laura Walsh, Customer Service Assistant at Bicton Heath Food
Laura is so busy in her local community, from climbing mountains to helping out at her local primary school.
She says, “Our walk up Snowdon on 17th July was to mark two years since my mum passed away suddenly with sepsis, hence deciding to walk for UK Sepsis. Some colleagues from work and my boys came with me. It took us around 3 hours and I was very relieved to get to the top! We raised just over £850 with help from friends, family and customers.
“Using my colleague volunteer hours over the years I have supported our local primary school in providing food for their breakfast club. We’ve also organised gardening activities, Fairtrade events, Easter hunts, Christmas carols and several litter picks to help the school. They really are at the heart of our community.”

Ashleigh Bailey, Deputy Nursery Manager at Newbiggin Nursery
Ashleigh is a dedicated helper at her local primary school, supporting the children with their learning and accompanying them on many school trips, including Beach School where the children had a lesson with The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Plus, she and her nursery colleagues helped to raise enough money for the school to access the Ruffles first aid resource.
Ashleigh also put her darts and dominoes skills to the test to win 6,000 in a charity darts and dominoes league. Her team split the winnings between Daft As A Brush Cancer Patient Care and North East Dementia Care.
