Doing good together, a team of 35 remarkable colleagues took to the waters of Himley Hall Lake, Dudley in dragon boats to raise money for local charities. A fantastic day all around, the teams had colleagues from Food, Childcare and Support Services.
Your Co-op has been supporting the annual Dragon Boat Challenge since 2016, and this year we entered two boats into the race.
The crews consisted of 35 remarkable colleagues from local Your Co-op food and childcare branches, and support colleagues. We also enlisted the help of 14 members keen on doing good together.
One of the teams came in an amazing fourth place overall, and a huge well done to everyone involved.
In total, since we started entering the fun and physical competition, we’ve raised over £10,000 for local charities.
The money is always split equally between Wolverhampton Rotary’s good causes (who organise the event) and our nominated charities, which have included Just Straight Talk, Alz Café and Wyre Forest Home Start in the past, and Zebra Access this year.

Albrighton Food Store Manager Jen Rust has been team captain for the dragon boat racing since we first took part. She said, “It was an absolutely brilliant day. We have a real fun day out whilst doing good together and raising a huge amount for our charity partners.”
Mike Boyce from the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton said, “The Rotary Club of the city of Wolverhampton have been organising the Dragon boat event at Himley Park for about 20 years now and then that time over £400,000 has been raised for good causes.
“We are very grateful to everyone who enters, but especially to the regular participants such as The Midcounties Co-op who have supported the event on many occasions. We see the whole event as a huge team effort bringing together organisations who believe in supporting their communities.”
