Today we hear from Young Co-operators Network member Sigal Ali. A young member passionate about the positive changes in the lives of women, she is currently the youngest member of the Women of Wolverhampton (WoW) community group. If you remember, we visited them as part of International Women’s Day last month. Read her story below.
Hi Sigal! First of all, tell us a bit about you?
Hi YCN! Well, I’m 19 years old, live in Wolverhampton. I am a first-year undergraduate student at Aston University. Currently studying International Business and Management which is a 4-year course, (I know!) When I’m not working or studying, I spend my time drawing and dancing!
Who are the Women of Wolverhampton?
Women of Wolverhampton (WoW) are the leading network for women and women’s organisations in Wolverhampton. They provide a platform for women to voice their views, influence decision-making and participate fully in city life. Their aim is to facilitate positive change in the lives of women in Wolverhampton by advancing gender equality and full participation in city life.
So, what made you choose to be part of the Women of Wolverhampton group?
I have been a part of WoW for about 4 months now, so not that long ago! I heard about the group and I just wanted to know what WoW women do (take a glimpse of what they do behind the scenes). I was curious. I started to attend their general meetings and discussions and I think I learned quite a lot! For instance, last week we had a talk about women in STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. Where we had an interesting discussion about how women are depicted in that particular industry, gender equality and the general role of women in society.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
Everything!
Throughout history and daily life, news and events we have seen and read about (the different movements in the past) that call for gender equality and rights in society.
For me, I believe International Women’s Day is a product of this remarkable fight. Additionally, this day marks the unity and struggle of women from different backgrounds and identities. Also, recognise and celebrate the achivments of women. For example, women such as Malala Yousafzai and in science Maria Curie!
How do you empower/motivate yourself?
Interesting question!
Well, when I am feeling down, I tend to read letters that I wrote to myself (like my favourite quotes from people). Those letters remind me to forge ahead. I think this is funny; after reading them I feel better and start to write myself more! So over time I end up with so many ... it’s never-ending cycle but definitely helps me push through those days I need an extra push!
Finally…who is your role model?
My role model is Andrew Carnegie. He lived in a cottage in Scotland, was unable attend school – definitely did not have the best upbringing.
However, he acknowledged the significance of books and education, so he borrowed books and from there spent most of his time learning. I mean, one of his achievements was the establishment of the Keystone Bridge Company!
What makes him my role model, is that after he became wealthy, he did not forget the importance of education and books - so he contributed majority of his wealth to charities, donating money to libraries and gaining his well-deserved nickname! The Patron Saint of libraries!
