As we mark Respect for Shopworkers Week, we are recognising our remarkable store teams - and continue the call for respect, protection and fairness for all colleagues who serve our communities.
This annual USDAW campaign, part of the Freedom From Fear initiative, provides an important opportunity to stand up for our colleagues on the frontline against threats, violence and abuse. We are proud to have supported this campaign over the years and continue to raise awareness.
Creating a safer environment for our colleagues
Over the past year, significant progress has been made following sustained campaigning from USDAW, the Co-operative movement and other retail partners. The UK Government has introduced a new standalone offence for assaults against retail workers, recognising the vital role our colleagues play in serving communities. This means that violence, abuse, or threats towards shopworkers will now carry tougher penalties under the law.
The Home Office Retail Crime Action Plan and the upcoming Winter of Action 2025/26 will further strengthen police focus on retail crime - ensuring better reporting, faster investigations of repeat offenders and stronger local partnerships.

Meeting with the West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner, West Midlands Police and USDAW last month to discuss the rise in retail crime
We continue to work closely with West Midlands Police, Police and Crime Commissioners, and business crime partnerships to tackle retail crime and anti-social behaviour. Together, we are making our stores safer for colleagues, members, and customers alike.
Last week, Chris Chandler, Head of Store Support, attended the Thames Valley Police ‘United Against Retail Crime’ conference, where he highlighted the significant impact that retail crime, particularly violent offences, has on retail colleagues. This engagement reflects Thames Valley Police’s proactive approach and strong commitment to tackling retail crime and supporting those affected.

Aside from activities for Respect for Shopworkers week, the Safer Stores team will be joining forces with West Midlands Police during Safer Business Action Week, visiting key hotspot areas for crime within Walsall.
