Saving Energy: Clocks are changing

The clocks change this weekend, which means longer evenings and a greater reliance on electric lighting. It also means that timeclocks at sites will need adjusting. Here’s how you can help save energy as winter approaches.
Changing timeclocks
Many of our sites have automated timeclocks to schedule when lighting, air-conditioning and refrigeration units turn on and off.
When the clocks change on Sunday, please ensure colleagues take responsibility for amending timeclocks at your site as soon as possible.
If sites have any issues with their timeclocks, please contact Property Services.
We can’t keep energy use down without your support, so thank you for playing your part!
Other things you can do
Here’s a quick reminder of 5 small things you can do to make a big difference in your site’s energy use:
1 - Use heaters sparingly
If you’re using a heater (portable or otherwise) please only use them when required and turn it off as soon as you can. If the heater has a thermostat, set it so that it cuts off when the room is warm enough.
2 - Get the temperature right
Ensure to check air-conditioning and heating settings as we move into Autumn and Winter, and aim to keep the temperature steady, between 20 to 22 degrees. Heating costs rise by about 8% for every 1°C of overheating.
3 - Turn off the lights
With shorter days, we will need to use lights more frequently but you can save energy by turning off lights when not in use.
4 - Watch those doors and windows
Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to retain heat. And if you have automatic front doors, please make sure they are working correctly to keep the heat in. Please report any faults with automated front doors through Property Services.
5 - Follow your bespoke site energy saving guide
Every part of our business has a specific energy saving diagram outlining ways you can save energy in the workplace. Follow these diagrams throughout the day and when closing down your site at close of business.
