King Charles III's Coronation
Tomorrow we will witness the official coronation of King Charles III, monarch of the United Kingdom and 14 commonwealth realms. His coronation comes some seven months after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, and I am sure that the celebrations tomorrow will be a marked contrast to that sad occasion last September. Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years and witnessed profound changes to society and the lives of her subjects. Whilst King Charles III will be unlikely to reign for such a period, I have no doubt that the accelerated pace of change today and the advancement of new technologies will see ensure that his monarchy presides over significant transformation and societal change.

I have seen some of the fantastic displays across our Food stores as we look to ensure our members and customers can find everything they need to celebrate the occasion. Along with displays and activities in Travel and Childcare branches – they look great. As I am sure is the case with many of our colleagues, I won’t be watching the coronation live on TV but will hopefully catch the recordings on Saturday evening and ‘fast forward’ to the best bits!
Colleague Volunteering and the Big Help Out
As part of the wider coronation plans this weekend, you may have heard about ‘The Big Help Out’ taking place on 8 May. Encouraging everyone up and down the country to come together and help out in their own local communities, it’s a great initiative helping so many different causes.
Across the Society, we have so many remarkable colleagues who already volunteer and help out to support others with their volunteering hours. From head shaving to marathons to fundraising, they really do make a big difference with the things that they do.
So, starting next Monday, each week on Colleagues Connect we will be showcasing some of these brilliant colleagues and how they support their own local communities. All colleagues have access to 22.5 hours of volunteering, so I encourage you to take advantage when you can. To find out more about your volunteering hours and support your community, click here.
Upgraded system across all Food stores
This week, I am pleased to say that we have successfully upgraded our existing ‘Promopay’ system to version 3 across our Food estate. A system which allows us to give member offers in our food stores, we can now offer a lunchtime meal deal at a member exclusive price. Giving customers a really good reason to become members and save on their lunch.
This follows a successful pilot in a number of stores, so I’m excited to see the results over the next few months, where we hope this will increase both membership and member spend. A big thank you to all the teams who have been working hard to deliver this important project.
Fairer Living Festival & AGM – bookings filling up
With the Fairer Living Festival and our AGM now just over a week away, preparations are being finalised for the big day with over 2,500 bookings. With a range of activities for the whole family along with an appearance from TV personality Ben Fogle, colleagues are invited to come along with their friends and family. If you do then you will be automatically entered into an exclusive competition to win £150 worth of Society vouchers. I look forward to seeing you on the day and to book on click here.
