We have put together a glossary that sets out defined terms that are important across the Society's policies.

Purpose
This glossary sets out defined terms and compliments the Society’s PSG policies. It focusses on terms that are common across the Society’s policies, rather than repeating all definitions and abbreviations.
If you are unsure of the meaning of a term in a policy, you should check if it is defined in the policy itself, if it isn’t you should refer to this glossary. If you are unable to find a definition and do not understand the meaning of a term, please speak to your line manager or the HR advisor who supports your business group. Alternatively, you can email HR.advice@midcounties.coop.

Definition |
Consistency |
Consistency means the appropriate interpretation and application of the Society’s policies, to ensure they are routinely applied to colleagues in a similar way across the Society. |
Disability |
Disabilities are described in the Equality Act 2010 as having a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities |
Diversity |
Diversity is about understanding, accepting, respecting and valuing differences between people's backgrounds, knowledge, skills, needs and experiences, and encouraging and using those differences to create an effective workforce. |
Equality |
Equality means treating everyone with fairness and respect and recognising the needs of individuals. |
Fair |
Fairness is treating people equally without favouritism or discrimination. |
Inappropriate behaviour |
Inappropriate behaviour occurs where the conduct of a colleague falls below the standards which the society reasonably expects. |
Inclusion |
Inclusion is empowering colleagues and offering opportunities for all to reach their potential |
Respect |
Respect is to have due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others. |
Protected Characteristics |
The Equality Act 2010 is concerned with discrimination and harassmentin respect of nine protected characteristics: age; disability; gender reassignment; marriage and civil partnership; pregnancy and maternity; race; religion or belief; sex; and sexual orientation. |
