Owned by our members, Your Co-op membership forms over 720,000 members, making us one of the largest co-operatives in the UK. Today during Co-op Fortnight, we highlight why Membership is so important and ultimately decides our Society democracy.
Hear from our member Andy below on why he chose to become a member:
The People
People have been at the heart of every co-operative since the first one opened its doors in 1844. We’ve moved with the times to always make a progressive difference. So as our business grows, we give back more than ever. Profits and rewards are shared. Decisions are taken democratically between colleagues and members. It’s a kinder, more inclusive way of doing business.
“It’s not just a food service, it’s a personal service. It’s done with kindness and thought. They’re very nice people, all of them.” Mrs Mary Langdown Member who received our 100,000th food delivery earlier this year.
Mary is just one of the many thousand members who use our services. Even through difficult times, we have adapted.

Democracy – Society Elections
The Society’s Elections demonstrate our values in action, particularly Democracy, which forms a key part of being a co-operative. Democracy (one of our DOES Values) is at the heart of our business, we are owned and run by our members. Our members vote to elect our Board of Directors, who set the direction of our Society.
Nominations are now open. This is where any member can put themselves forward to stand for either the Board of Directors or Member Engagement Committee.

For our young members, this year for the first time we’re running the Young Co-operators Society Elections. These will give the chance to young members to have an equal voice by sharing their thoughts and opinions ultimately influencing what the Society does in the future. Click here for more information.
